It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Brent Nichols (age 66), husband, father, grandfather and brother on May 31, 2025, at Fairview Health Complex, Fairview, AB, after a hard-fought battle against pancreatic cancer.
Brent was born in Langley, BC. His family moved to Edmonton, Alberta and returned to Langley when he was 12 with his Mother and his 5 siblings. Brent loved the outdoors. He was a member of the Langley Rod and Gun Club. After high school, Brent returned to Edmonton looking for work. He started working at the Domtar plant in Edmonton and then moved to Calgary when the plant established itself there. He survived every change in the name, Domtar, Norampac and finally Cascades for 47 years. In 2019 he ventured into federal politics as an independent candidate of Forest Lawn in Calgary.
Brent was an active member of Alberta Fish and Wildfire, attending the Edmonton Fish and Game Association, serving as Secretary/Treasurer and President. In later years, he held memberships in the Okotoks Rifle & Pistol Club and the Dunvegan Fish and Game Association in Fairview, AB.
Brent was a tenacious information gatherer and keeper of history, intellectual or personal information. He truly loved a vibrant debate on any topic, (especially if he had read up on it!). An eyewink to others indicated that knew he was losing, and then he would turn the conversation by saying that he was just joking or change the subject completely. Brent was known as the "surprise visitor". He liked to just get in his vehicle and venture on a journey to see friends and family or to learn and observe something new. His kids were always in the dark about "what Dad was up to" which made their adventures interesting. To the recipient, they never knew when Brent would arrive at the door for a visit. It didn't matter where you lived, he liked seeing the "surprise" on faces when the door opened. He would immediately offer to help with any project going on. He loved his family deeply, and his sometimes '"gruff" style of communication was his way of showing how much he truly loved you and wanted to help you be successful. Brent loved the outdoors as a hunter/fisher, and his biggest wish was to retire in rural Alberta to live off the land.
Brent is survived by his loving family; Wife, Editha Calmona Nichols, his daughter, Rachel Hart and grandkids, Eddie and Ayla, his sons, Victor and Steven Spacil, his stepdaughter, Joana Riza (William) and grandkids, Alecksa and Emma, stepson, Jayson Gilead. Brent is survived by sisters Jo Anne Fleming (Owen), Cathy Sloan (Richard) and his brother, Scott Nichols (Kim) along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces/nephews. He was predeceased by his mother VaIara Morlang, his father, Frank Nichols and older brothers Monty and Bradley Nichols.
At Brent's request, he did not want to have a service. He wished for his family and friends to light a candle and remember him just as they knew him in their own personal way.
In lieu of flowers, for those who would like to make a memorial donation in his memory, the family requests that you consider donating to the Edmonton Fish and Game Association, Okotoks Rifle & Pistol Club or Dunvegan Fish and Game Association, in Fairview, AB.
