Ernie Lanti, born August 23, 1935, in Porcupine Plain, SK to Kus and Sophie Lanti, passed away in High Level on July 6, 2022, at the age of 86 in the presence of his family.
In his early years, at the age of 11, Ernie moved to Nipawin, SK to the foster home of Pete and Arma Robinson, who eventually moved their family to Manning, AB. Here is where Ernie began working as a cat-skinner at the age of 16. By 1953, Ernie filed on a homestead (NE 28-109-18-W5) and met Kay Bieraugle. They fell in love and were married on July 9, 1958. On this homestead, Ernie and Kay began to farm the land while living in Grimshaw, AB, traveling back and forth in the summers. Ernie and Kay eventually built a home on the homestead, to which they permanently relocated in 1966.
In 1967 Ernie got the flying bug and obtained his private pilot's license. He cut an airstrip at the farm, bought himself a plane, and never looked back. Ernie always needed to stay busy. Besides farming, Ernie owned trucks where he hauled gravel and oilfield equipment in the North, helped Kay with the cows, raised his four children, worked on airplanes in the winter, and rebuilt several airplanes from wrecks (some of which were compliments of his flying buddies) and had a Trenching Company for several years. He also kept busy by being on several community boards: acting as President of the High Level Rural Hall Society board for many years, was an ID #23 councilor (serving on several boards), as well as holding a seat on the High Level Seed Cleaning Plant board. Ernie also took part in coaching his children in Minor Hockey and playing on the Senior High Level Rangers team who once traveled down to Mexico for a tournament. Ernie greatly enjoyed the company. He loved hosting Happy Hours in the hanger, having coffee and pie at the Senior Centre, and his drives around the area to inspect crops. Ernie was always willing to share a memory, or a funny story with friends to put a smile on everyone’s faces.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kay, with 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Ernie is also survived by 1 brother and 5 sisters.
A Celebration of Life will will take place Saturday September 10, 2022 at the High Level Rural Hall at 2:00 pm. Join us to celebrate Ernie and his long, wonderful life.
