Irene Ellen Basnett

It is with much love and sad hearts that we mourn the passing of Irene Ellen Basnett on January 30, 2024, at the age of 90.

Irene was born at home on the farm in Meadowview, Alberta on July 29, 1933 to Cecil & Cecile (Sally) McKay, followed a year later by her sister and best friend Gladys. She married Benny Basnett on August 14, 1956 in Drayton Valley. Shortly after they moved to their farm in Eureka River, where they raised their 3 boys and their grandkids spent many hours visiting.

Irene was a tiny woman with a large presence. She was sentimental, caring, sometimes stern, artistic, photographer of all family events, a wonderful gardener and an incredibly hard worker. She taught her kids and grandkids to work hard and pushed them to be their best. She cared a great deal about her family and those close to her.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Benny, their son Doug, grandson Christopher, parents Cecil and Sally McKay, niece Devine and several extended family members.

She is survived by sons Maury and Tom and daughter-in-law Karen, grandchildren Ben (Jackie), Lance, Kristin (Dom), Darcy, Nicole (Jesse), great grandchildren Hunter, Ryker, Ava, Fallon, Chloe and Quinnley, sister Gladys (Lloyd) and her daughters Twila (Richard), Kim (Ivan) and grandson Brady, as well as her extended Basnett family.

Irene’s family would like to extend their deepest and heartfelt thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Fairview Long Term Care, Dr. Irvine, and all those involved in her care.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eureka River Hall with a luncheon to follow.
