Jo-Anne Shaw Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved sister, friend, auntie, mom, and grandma, Jo-Anne Shaw on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 80 years of age.

Jo-Anne was born at the Fairview Hospital February 17, 1941 to Florence and Harold Roy. She grew up on a farm outside of Fairview with her two brothers Ken and Doug. Riding the school bus she met her future husband Harry.

Jo-Anne went to Edmonton and received her three year diploma in nursing from the University of Alberta Hospital. She finished her diploma late 1962 and returned to Fairview to work at the Municipal Hospital in Long Term Care and Acute Care. Later that year on October 6, 1962 Jo-Anne and Harry got married. In the spring of 1963 they moved to the farm in Dell, where they happily lived and farmed for the next 41 years.

In 1965 their first child, Julie was born, followed by Andrea, Theron, Garth and Derek. Jo-Anne continued to work in nursing while raising a family and farming with Harry. In 1986 Jo-Anne decided to return to her studies and by 1990 she received her BSc in Nursing. After working in public health Jo-Anne became the family school liaison at EEO and STM until she retired in 2002.

Family and the community were very important to her. Jo-Anne touched the lives of many people through her work and involvement in various organizations around Fairview including Red Hats, Northwest Peace Community Adult Learning Council, Fairview Hospital Foundation, Fairview and Area Palliative Care Foundation, Dunvegan Historical Society, Restorative Justice, Girl Guides, Camp Go-For-It, Fairview Ski Hill, St. Paul’s United Church and Medical Ministry International.

Jo-Anne lost her husband Harry to cancer in 2003 and their son Theron in 2016. These were difficult times for her but she continued to display courage and supported for her family.

Following her retirement she continued to live out at the farm and spent many wonderful times with her grandchildren baking, sewing, gardening and playing. She also traveled to many different countries and continued to be very active in the community.

We will miss her very much.

Jo-Anne leaves behind her children: Julie (Howard), Andrea (Gord), Garth, Derek (Tamara), and daughter-in-law Tobi; her grandchildren who were her pride and joy: Nick, Carly, Megan, Benjamen, Samantha, Liam, Audrey, Joseph, Clara, Lane, Reid, and Lee; her siblings: Ken and Julie Roy, Doug and Sherril Roy; her brother and sister in laws: Mel and Isabelle Shaw, Vernon and Ilene Shaw, Wink and Anne Shaw, Alice and Peter Mumm, Stan Shaw, Glen and Linda Shaw, Don and Lorraine Shaw, Raymond and Pat Shaw; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and cousins.
