Landi Lekisch died unexpectedly at the age of 84 due to complications from cancer. He underwent two emergency surgeries, but unfortunately, despite being a healthy active man, he died on Monday September 18, 2023.
Less than a month prior to his death, family and friends were gathered for his beloved wife Rachael’s memorial service. Landi and Rachael died less than nine months apart and they both died on a Monday. Landi talked often about how life just didn’t have the same enjoyment without ‘Rach’. And perhaps Landi just stuck around long enough to do what needed to be done for her memorial, including making a cross for her gravesite out of a tamarack tree he felled, milled, and carved, to the actual digging of her grave. It was the first time our family had all been together, and he knew how much Rachael would have loved being there.
When the surgeon asked Landi if he consented to his last surgery he said ‘Well, we are already here.’ And while in the hospital he said, ‘I am not worried about anything.’ This speaks of Landi’s seemingly unfathomable depth and breadth of wisdom.
Landi had a light and gentle manner, with a great smile and sense of humour. We will forever be grateful for the time spent with him, and the teachings and love from this man.
Landi was born in Vienna Austria. His family moved to Switzerland where they lived for many years until they immigrated to Canada when Landi was 10 years old. His family travelled by train to Alberta where he lived for the remainder of his life. As a young boy he travelled north with his father who was a locum doctor in the Hines Creek area. It was in the north country that Landi expanded his love of land, sky, nature, and story. The north was also where he met his future wife Rachael and raised a family on their farm near Black Duck.
He is survived by his children Violet, Lynn, Landi Jr., and Judy; his grandchildren Kaitlin, Kaidyn, Hunter, Eli, Landyn, Jaydyn; and his great grandchildren Lily, Elena, Beckham, Saoirse, and Thomasin.
Landi would have wanted a nice warm summer day for his memorial as he wanted for Rachael’s. His family invite friends and family to gather in his honour at Friedenstal Hall on Saturday, August 17, 2024, Service at 2 pm, Reception at 3 pm.
Please reflect on his kindness and love, for that love remains alive in our remembrance.
