It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence Daniel Smithson at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, Alberta on March 11, 2026 at the age of 84 years.
Lawrence was born at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose to Robert and Elizabeth Smithson, the first of four children. He was raised on a farm north of Bittern Lake, Alberta and attended school in Armena, Alberta until grade 11 then going to Camrose Lutheran College for grade 12. He attended SAIT in Calgary for two winters taking Agricultural Mechanics and Diesel Mechanics.
He met his beautiful wife Florence Rode while attending the Church of God in Camrose, Alberta. They were married in 1963. To this union two children were born Grant in 1965 and Rhonda in 1968. Lawrence farmed with his dad north of Bittern Lake until 1968 until he and his family bought a farm at Cleardale in the Peace River country. They worshipped at the Worsley Baptist Church where they made many friends and neighbors. After the sale of the farm in 2002 they bought an acreage near Fairview, Alberta. After the death of his wife, Lawrence experienced deteriorating health and moved to the Harvest Lodge in Fairview, Albera. He later moved to Camrose to Bethany Meadows nursing home.
Lawrence was predeceased by his wife Florence; son Grant; parents Roberta and Elizabeth; parents-in-law Gustave and Lily Rode; niece Laura Rosalind Sorenson and his sisters-in-law.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Rhonda; two grandsons Paris and Alex Smithson; siblings Eileen (Randle) Broen, Lila (Darrell) Rosalind, Lee (Darlene) Smithson; brothers-in-law Ron (Gail) Rode and Phil; several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2026 at the Worsley Baptist Church at Worsley, Alberta with Pastor Dick Hale officiating. Interment will follow at the Cleardale Community Cemetery.
