Marshall Rolling, long-time resident of Fairview, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on October 21, 2024 at the age of 98.
Born on the family farm northeast of Bluesky, Marshall was fifth oldest in a family of 12 children. He lived his life dedicated to his family, community and church.
As a young man Marshall worked on the family farm and in a logging camp near the Sydorko saw mill. This is where he met his future wife, Jennie Sydorko. They were married August 9, 1951.
In 1950, he spent a time working on the paddle wheeler, the S.S. Klondike, hauling freight and passengers up and down the Yukon River. He owned and operated Fairview’s British American (BA) Bulk Fuel Dealership and the Bluesky Motors Garage and Cafe. He purchased a two-unit apartment and was known as being a great landlord. He also worked in the automotive department of Fairview College and as a guard for the RCMP.
Marshall served his community as an active member on numerous service clubs and in the United Church. He was a member of the Fairview Chamber of Commerce, Mighty Peace Tourist Association, Fairview Kinsmen Club, Fairview Elks Lodge, Waterhole Old-timers Association, Dunvegan Historical Advisory Council, Dunvegan Historic Society and the Fairview Pioneer Museum.
He worked countless volunteer hours in making Fairview a better place for families to live. He recently received a certificate for 14 years of delivering Meals on Wheels and served on the Fairview Victims Assistance Association.
Marshall was the community’s historian. If you had a question about the area’s history, he could either tell you the answer immediately or would look it up and let you know. He and Jennie enjoyed square dancing for many years. His personal dedication to the Fairview Pioneer Museum is evident in a large building bearing his name in acknowledgment of his contributions.
Marshall had a tremendous love for his family and friends. He enjoyed getting together to share a meal and to visit. He regularly walked down town for the mail and to enjoy a coffee with his many friends and family.
Marshall was predeceased by his parents - Oscar and Mabel (Davidson) Rolling, his brothers and their spouses - Dawson, Cecil (Madeline), Delmar (Josephine), Dale (Rene), Glen (Bernice), Derry and Blaine, his sisters and their spouses - Sheila (Jim McLachlan), Shirley (Richard Dewitz) and Sharon Rolling, sister-in law - Bridget Rolling and his granddaughter - Christie Fitzpatrick.
Marshall is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Jennie, sons Wayne (Odette), Myron and Douglas (Jen), daughter Elaine Fitzpatrick (Scott), granddaughter Jennifer Madden (Earl) and great-granddaughters Jamee Fitzpatrick (Dakota) and Ella Madden, his youngest brother - Deane Rolling and sister-in-law - Margaret Rolling.
