Norman Dale Yerxa Obituary

Dale’s parents, Sterling Yerxa and May (McLachlan) Yerxa, named him Norman to honour both his grandfathers. Dale was born in the Fairview hospital and lived in Dell until he completed Grade 8. For Grades 9 and 10, Dale lived with his grandmother and aunt and uncle in Dunvegan so he could ride the bus to Fairview. He would ride his bike back through the Dell coulee to be home on the weekends. In 1957, the family moved to Fairview. Dale graduated from high school in June of 1959 and then went to the University of Alberta to study in the Faculty of Education. After completing two years of education, he took a position teaching at Hines Creek and soon moved into administration. On September 13, 1963, Dale married the love of his life, Lorraine (Dacyk) Yerxa. By 1967, both Dale and Lorraine had completed their Bachelors of Education. Summer school was made more bearable by having a membership to a golf club in the city. Dale and Lorraine’s daughter, Charlene, was born on January 29, 1972. The family spent summers driving to ball and golf tournaments. Dale remarked how much he enjoyed taking Charlene and some of her cousins on holidays and watching them enjoy various sights. The family moved to Green Island and market gardening became the new passion. They later sold the farm and moved back to Fairview during their golden years. Dale and Lorraine’s granddaughter, Carol Ann, was born on April 13, 1996. Carol Ann had many fond memories growing up on the farm in Green Island with her mom and grandparents. Grandma Lorraine always made sure plenty of garden food was on the table, and many road trips were planned. Grandpa Dale made sure Carol Ann grew up well-versed in the importance of a good education, memorizing many nursery rhymes for all occasions, infinite hunting, curling, and ball tournament stories, and an appreciation for life and to not take everything so seriously. On August 23, 2025, Carol Ann married her best friend, Quintin Bilar. Dale was elated, and could not be more proud to have another great young man join the family. Dale leaves behind a legacy of lives he has touched, and is lovingly remembered as a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, mentor, hunting educator, coffee-senator, poker player, and by many former students as “the best and most caring math teacher”. Dale is survived by his daughter Charlene, granddaughter Carol Ann (Quintin), and sister Darlene (Wayne). Dale is also survived by Lorraine’s siblings Jeannette (Buck), Marilyn (Carl), Larry (Ev), Sharon (David), Dennis, and Bev (Brian); and, many nieces and nephews. Dale is predeceased by his wife Lorraine, parents Sterling and May, brother Gordon, brothers-in-law David, Jack, and Ken, nephews Preston, Jason, and Greg, and niece Roxanne.
