Otto Urban Obituary

We mournfully announce the passing of OTTO URBAN, a long time resident of Fairview, Alberta.  He was known by many as Papa or Uncle Otto.  Otto lived a long life and was 94 years old when he passed away.  He was in Fairview at the Long Term Care Unit of the Fairview Hospital surrounded by precious loved ones and incredibly dedicated doctors, nurses and health care workers who stayed by his side until Otto passed.  Otto died of natural causes.

Otto was born in Quedlinburg, Germany October 16th, 1927.  He came to Canada with his parents in 1928 when he was only a year old.  After a brief time in Black Duck area north of Fairview the family moved to Winnipeg, MB then moving back to Fairview, Alberta where Otto spent the remainder of his days.

Although Otto did not have formal education he was a highly skilled mechanic, welder and handyman. All of these were self taught trades and he received his Provincial Licences in mechanics and welding.

Otto met the love of his life, Lluella May Stirling of Fairview / Scottswood and on August 16th, 1949 they were married. The couple were married for 47 years before Lluella passed away March 17, 1997 after a short battle with cancer.  They welcomed 2 sons; Dennis in 1951 and Darrell in 1953.

Otto worked for the Municipality of Fairview, Fairview School Division and eventually for Anderson Exploration / Devon when the Dunvegan gas plant opened.  He was the first mechanic hired and spent 20 years, retiring at 65 years of age.  His son Darrell would later follow in his footsteps at the plant.  After retiring Otto loved to go for coffee with his buddies and could often be found at the local coffee shop or playing pool or cards at the senior centre.

Otto was pre-deceased by his parents (Katarina & Anton), his beloved wife Lluella, in 1997, his siblings, Joseph, Johnny, Tony and Irwin as well as his daughter in law Shelley (Darrell's wife) and a great grand daughter, Kaizlyn.  Otto is survived by his sister Angie Feist, two children, Dennis (Lori), Darrell, eight grandchildren (Robbie, Charles, Jared, Heidi, Amanda, Stephanie, Katherine & Breanna), seven great grandchildren as well as, many nieces and nephews.

Otto will be laid to rest in Waterhole Cemetery with loved ones who previously passed on. There will not be a funeral but when the beautiful Peace Country, which Otto loved, thaws in the spring time, there will be a gathering of Relatives and friends at the gravesite to celebrate Otto's life.

Thank you so much to all those who have reached out to the family, the doctors, nurses, licensed practical nurses, and all the amazing health care workers from top to bottom in AHS who do such incredible work at the Lodges, Hospitals, Long Term Care and Palliative Care facilities. You are all Earthly Angels and the family appreciates you all so very much. God Bless you all.  The Urban family.

Any Memorial Donations can be made to the Fairview Palliative Care facility in lieu of flowers etc. Thank you! The Urban family.
