It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving Father and Grandpa, Peter Thoma on March 3, 2025.
Peter was born on April 19, 1938, in Munchen, Odesa, a region of the Ukraine and moved to Canada in 1951. He lived in Friedenstal with his mother Ottilie and siblings John, Anna and Mary. They later moved to Fairview. Peter married Ida Heck on July 13, 1964, and they had two children, Lynette in 1965 and Darren in 1967.
Peter attended school in Friedenstal where he played hockey and baseball. He also played soccer and Floor Hockey in Fairview. Having learned the English language, he went out into the workforce. At a young age, he started working for Mr & Mrs Walter Dickman in the bakery business. Later he moved to Grande Prairie and worked for Lars and Arnold Loberg in the stucco and plastering trade. After many years he returned to Fairview and became a lumber grader and farm aid for H.R & N Lumber Company. After he left the lumber business, he worked at Red Cap Dairy for 8 years until he came to work at Fairview IGA, now Freson Bros. He was a dedicated employee and worked there for 35 years and retired in 2005.
Peter enjoyed sports, fishing, woodworking and tinkering on just about anything, machinery, equipment, cars or appliances. We never could figure out how he could fix everything and anything with only a Grade 8 education.
Peter moved to the Harvest Lodge in 2023 where he was able to visit with old friends and make some new ones. He enjoyed his morning visits in the cozy corner with his floor mates and visiting in the Dining room. He loved watching hockey, football and just about any sport on TV. He loved listening to his old-time country music every night before bed and reading his Fairview History books. Thank you to the Staff at the Harvest Lodge for all the care they gave Dad while he was there.
Peter is survived by his daughter Lynette and granddaughter Calissa. His son Darren (Tina) and grandchildren Daine, Logan and Ava. He also leaves to mourn his brother John Thoma and sister Anna Schulski, his in-laws Peter Heck, Wendelin Heck, Frank Heck, John Heck, Margaret Rolling, Ilene & Vernon Shaw, Caroline Ramsay, Lorraine and Don Shaw, Elizabeth Heck & Fred Dettling, Genevieve Holubowich, Anne Watchorn, Evelyn & Aaron Ekman, Elaine & Russell Dreyer. Numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Peter was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years Ida, parents Ottilie and Michael Thoma, brother Michael, sister Mary Fischer, mother & father-in-law Wendelin and Monica Heck, brothers-in-law Fred Fischer, Albert Schulski, Blaine Rolling, Fred Ramsay and Thor Holubowich.
