Richard Paul Hammerschmidt passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on June 15, 2022 at the age of 54, after a courageous battle against cancer.
Rick was born in Fairview, Alberta on June 30, 1967, to loving parents Joe & Yvette Hammerschmidt, and was the youngest of 3 children.
Rick attended STM School and graduated in 1985. Rick was always a hard worker and from a very early age he had a number of part time jobs as well as helping his dad on the farm. After he graduated he worked in the oilfield for a short time and drove truck, and eventually owned and operated his own trucks, hauling gravel & asphalt and logs. During this time he continued to help on the farm and knew that was what he wanted to do. He was a farmer at heart. Eventually, Rick was able to purchase his own land and he devoted the years from that time on, to growing and improving his farm. His dad, Joe, continued to farm with him until the very end and was always his mentor and his biggest supporter.
In 1989 Rick met his first wife, Betty Diceman, and her two beautiful little girls, Tanya and Amber. In 1994, their daughter Paige was born, and their son Myles arrived in 1999. Rick was always a happy and fun-loving father to his four children.
In 2014, at a Memorial Curling Bonspiel for a close friend, he met his love, Theresa Frey. In the unexpectedly short time Rick and Theresa had together they had many happy times, and experiences with family and friends. They were happiest when they were together and spent very little time apart.
Rick was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and son.
Rick was predeceased by his grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
Rick is survived by his parents Joe & Yvette, his wife Theresa, his four children, Tanya (Sarah), Amber (Clint), Paige (Erik), Myles, and Katelyn (Theresa’s daughter), his beloved grandchildren Jaleesa and Deekan, his brother Mike (Michelle) and his sons Bryce and Brett, and sister Louise (Rob) and their children Alexandra (Caleb) and Zachery (Sharon).
Rick is also survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, and good friends.
The loss of Rick has left a hole in each of our hearts, and we will miss him dearly.
A memorial service and a celebration of Rick’s life will be held at the E E Oliver School on July 02, 2022, at 3:00 PM. A dinner will follow at the Dunvegan Inn.
If desired, memorial donations can be made to The Friedenstal Historical Society.
