Robert Osborne Obituary

Robert Jason Osborne was born on February 9, 1936, in Fairview, Alberta. His parents, John Frank and Hortense Olive Osborne (Foster), were homesteading in Dell, near Dunvegan, at the time.  He was their first child, followed by Donald James, Reginald Bruce, and Susan Edna. The family moved to Green Island, just outside of Fairview, when they bought four quarters there from Tensie’s Dad, PJ Foster, in 1946. Bob grew up on that farm, participating in all of the duties involved in mixed farming, including grain, livestock, chickens, pigs, etc. The Osborne family operated Green Island Herefords, as well. He also grew up surrounded by cousins, uncles, and aunts, as PJ Foster had 13 children, and quite a few of them lived close by. Bob worked for HRN Lumber Co., and Shaw Transport, after completing Heavy Duty Mechanics at Chicago Vocational in Edmonton, in 1955. He bought three-quarters of land himself, in Green Island with the wages from these companies and later in life, operated Green Island Trucking. In 1963, Bob met and married the love of his life, Mary Grindell (Gottfredson), in Calgary, moving her and her two daughters, Peggy and Sharon to his farm, where they lived until he purchased his parents’ place in 1974. Mary died in 1986, and Bob remarried in 1989, to Elaine Morin.  Elaine predeceased Bob in 2022, after they moved to Harvest Lodge, in Fairview.

Bob was well known in Green Island and Fairview, as an excellent neighbour and friend, and as a genuinely honest, good man. There is no greater praise. He always had a smile on his face, for everyone. He is predeceased by his first wife, Mary, his cherished brother Donald, his mother and father (John and Tensie Osborne), his second wife, Elaine, his niece, Cheryl Osborne, and a grandson, Dallas Morin. He is survived by his daughters, Peggy (Ian) Gardner and Sharon (Adrian) Potter, their children, Shauna Gardner (John Carter), Layne Gardner (Allison), Jason Hryniuk, (Megan), Christopher Hryniuk (Kathleen) and Amanda Tipman, and seven great grandchildren.  He is also survived by Elaine’s children, Marlene Douglas (Jim), their children, Cara Leaf (Clint), Crista Gair (Derrick), Jamie Rogers (Berkeley), Ruby Lee Fraser (James), their children Katrina Beharrell (Chris), Heather Fraser (Robbie Pierson)and Tim Morin (Patty) and their children, Dayna Morin, Devin and Julie Morin, and Maegan Summers (Jay) along with 20 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his deceased brother Don’s daughter, Patty Pyy (Art) and their family, his brother Reginald Bruce Osborne and his family, and his sister, Susan Edna Beck (Harvey) and her family.

Bob worked very hard in his life, as most rural folk do, but he also loved to be around family and friends, share stories and have a good time. He believed that what he put into life would come back to him, and he knew that his job was to look after those who needed his care. He loved old-time music and dancing. Those who loved him hope that he will Rest in the Peace that he deserves and that he knew that they loved and appreciated him, always. Bob Osborne died on November 11, 2023, in Fairview Municipal Hospital, with loved ones beside him. A memorial service will be held in the spring.

“Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a Dad.”
